How to connect your iPhone X running iOS 14.2 to the Rakuten Mobile network

This article will explain how you can use your iPhone X running iOS 14.2 on the Rakuten Mobile network in Japan. These instructions also apply to those who are on the Rakuten Mobile network and have updated iOS on their iPhone X. I tried following multiple troubleshooting tutorials in Japanese before finding one that solved my problem, which I have summarized below.

Update: This post will no longer be updated since I no longer have an iPhone X. Instead, I’ve updated the instructions below to show you where to download the necessary files.

Some things to note before getting started:

  • You will need to follow these instructions if you lose your data connection after upgrading iOS.
  • This process should take about 15-30 minutes, depending on your PC skills.
  • As of November 26, 2020, the iPhone X and earlier iPhone models are not officially supported on the Rakuten Mobile network.
  • I’ve only tested this on an iPhone X, so I cannot confirm if the instructions below work on earlier iPhone models.

  • iPhone X
    • Lightning cable
    • Safari web browser
    • Wi-Fi connection
  • Windows computer
    • Internet connection (Ethernet or Wi-Fi)
    • iTunes


On your iPhone X:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Swipe down on the screen to reveal the search bar. Then, type Find My iPhone and tap the setting.
  3. Tap Find My iPhone and disable the setting.
  4. Open the Safari web browser, and go to the kakuyasu-sim webpage. Tap the link that says iPhoneの構成プロファイル to download the Rakuten custom profile configuration to your iPhone X.
  5. When prompted, click Allow to allow the profile to be installed on your device.
  6. Tap Phone to confirm to install the profile on your phone.
  7. Go to Settings, tap General, and then select Profiles.
  8. Select the Rakuten UN-LIMIT構成プロファイル(IPv6/IPv4) profile, and tap Install.
    • Note: You may first need to uninstall your previous cellular profile. If so:
      1. Tap Profiles, and choose the profile under Configuration Profile.
      2. Tap Remove Profile, and enter your passcode, and choose Remove.
  9. When the Consent screen appears, click Next.
  10. When the Warning screen appears, click Install and click Install to confirm.
  11. Tap Done.

The following instructions are only for Windows, as I cannot confirm the steps on a Mac. I imagine the steps would be pretty similar, with the only difference being using Terminal instead of Command Prompt.

On your Windows computer:

  1. In a web browser, go to the kakuyasu-sim webpage.
  2. Download the iPhoneX-uq.ipcc configuration file to your Downloads folder.
  3. Click the Windows Start button, and type Command Prompt.
  4. Where did you install iTunes from?:
    • If you installed iTunes from the Microsoft Store, type the following in the Command Prompt, changing “your_username” to your user name on your computer. Then, press Enter.
      "C:\Users\your_username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WindowsApps\iTunes.exe" /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1
    • If you installed iTunes from the Apple website, type the following in the Command Prompt, then press Enter.
      "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe" /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1
  5. Open iTunes, and connect your iPhone X via Lightning cable to your computer.
  6. When your iPhone X has connected to iTunes, click the phone icon in the top navigation bar.
  7. Simultaneously press and hold the Shift key on your keyboard and click Restore iPhone.
  8. When the window opens to select a file, click the drop-down menu in the lower right corner of the window, and select iPhone/iPad Carrier Configuration File (*.ipcc) as the file type.
  9. Choose the iPhoneX.ipcc file that you downloaded to your Downloads folder in Step 1. Then, press OK.

On your iPhone X:

  1. Unplug your iPhone X from the computer.
  2. Restart your iPhone X.
  3. Go to Settings.
  4. In the search bar, type Find My iPhone and tap the setting.
  5. Tap Find My iPhone and re-enable the setting.

After about 5 minutes, the bars for your cellular signal should appear in the top right corner of your iPhone X.

    “C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe” /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1

    please paste it as you see it.

    1. Thanks for the heads up. I believe the folder path you are referring to is correct if you installed iTunes from the Apple website. If you downloaded iTunes from the Microsoft Store, it is:

      “C:\Users\your_username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WindowsApps\iTunes.exe” /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1

      I have noted this in Step 3 of the section “On your Windows computer.”
